In journalistic writing, photos elevate the story. As a student journalist and photographer, the ability to combine my skills under Sac School Beat has helped me further refine my photography. This January I reviewed my 2023 photo album, and chose five stories told by my photos.

RALLY

These photos tell the story of high school tradition. Taken during Inderkum High School’s 2023 homecoming rally on October 6, they represent unity found at the high school as the Tigers dance to the music, and the crowd cheers them on.

THROUGH A WINDOW

My brother, mother and I took a trip to Chicago during the summer. As I watched my brother snap photos with his own camera through the Amtrak window, I turned to look out the window beside me. On July 1 I was taking a photo of a single car on the road, I realized the beauty in simplicity.

STAIR CLIMB

Each year, members of Inderkum High school’s Public Safety pathway honor firefighters who served our country on Sept. 11. 2001. Students climb the stadium bleachers and match the flights climbed in the World Trade Centers. The images tell a story of honoring the past and setting yourself up for the future as this group of students shape the way for future first responders. Taken Sept. 11. 2023.

HOMECOMING

The pride of a school football game is amplified through school festivities and student participation. The band and cheerleaders work together to make the Homecoming on Oct. 6 game special for Inderkum students. And fireworks are launched after each touchdown.

NAVIGATING CHICAGO

I spent a week in Chicago that taught me there were many ways to navigate city life. My family’s goal for this particular day was to make it to the Art Institute of Chicago. Using a train, a bus and then feet, we eventually made it to Michigan Avenue. Before walking inside the museum I snapped the final photo on July 3.

Our Goal

Your donation will support the SacSchoolBeat student journalists who are part of the Sacramento County Student Education Reporter program. Your contribution will allow us to work with more student journalists to cover education on campuses and in school districts in the Sacramento region. SacSchoolBeat's primary funder, the Sacramento County Office of Education, ended its participation in the program at the end of the 2024-25 school year, and SacSchoolBeat almost closed in June. But a timely mini-grant from the Sacramento Press Club allowed us to conduct our summer training and continue the program at least through the end of the fall semester.
